pu’erh – The Year of Tea

Category: pu’erh

Episode 010: Sticky Rice Pu’erh

Pu’erh (sometimes written as pu-erh) can be intimidating at first. I mean, there’s tea bags and loose leaf tea, but pu’erh is often sold in bricks, cakes, or in bird’s nest style tuocha like what you see here. Check out this video for a demonstration on how to brew pu’erh like this.

I’m not sure where I got this from — Golden Moon, maybe? — but it smells and tastes like aromatic sticky rice with a nice, starchy mouth feel. It’s a smooth taste that’s great hot or iced. Whether you’re new to pu’erh or not, give this one a try!

Episode 057: Climber’s High

Surprise — another maté blend! As a non-coffee drinker, maté and black tea are my go-to beverages when I need a buzz. The Tea Spot’s Climber’s High is a great, well-rounded cup of tea that’s great when you need a jolt in the morning or a pick-me-up after lunch.

It’s a yerba maté blend with chai spices, so it’s a light in body but heavy on flavor. There’s also tulsi rama, green tea, white tea, and pu’erh in this blend. It’s kind of a Whitman’s Sampler of tea in one cup!

Episode 068: Pu’erh Chorange

Adagio Teas’ Pu’erh Chorange was quite a delicious surprise for me this morning! While I am not a coffee drinker, there are some mornings when I want that kind of earthy taste. This blend delivered it in spades!

Rich pu’erh is blended with orange peels and cocoa nibs to create a deeply satisfying cup of tea. All the flavors blend together nicely with no overwhelming tastes. Don’t let the odd name fool you — this is some good tea!

Episode 118: Cardamom Pu’erh

I had my first true experience with cardamom when I was in college. A good friend of mine turned me on to Indian food and cardamom lassis, and it’s been one of my favorite flavors since then. Will Numi Organic Tea’s cardamom pu’erh bring it? Let’s find out!

This blend definitely has the cardamom smell, but the flavor’s a bit lackluster when it’s hot. The pu’erh doesn’t really shine through like I hoped it would, although I could imagine this being a pretty complex brew if you have it iced. And because there are only two ingredients in this blend, you can try your hand at making it yourself!

Episode 139: Grand Leaf Pu’erh

This grand leaf pu’erh from The Steeping Room in Austin, Texas is one of their most popular teas. And I can see why! The tea might look simple if you’re just glancing at the leaves, but don’t be fooled!

Once this cools down a bit, the real flavor of this tea blossoms. Get ready for some really rich notes of coffee and mocha. No, this isn’t a flavored tea — this is just really good pu’erh!
