Episode 158: Guayusa

I’ve heard a lot about guayusa, so I was very excited when I saw this at Zhi Tea in Austin! Guayusa is an Ecuadorian drink that packs as the same type of caffeinated kick as coffee, but also has a ton of health benefits like green tea. Like yerba maté, guayusa isn’t a “tea” per se; it’s a tisane.

The taste is very clean, with hints of parsley and pepper and a bit of sweetness. It’s great hot or iced (I had it both ways), and it won’t go bitter if you oversteep it. Sounds like a winner to me!

Episode 159: Maharaja Chai Oolong

Remember when I reviewed the Maharaja Chai/Samurai Chai Maté blend a while ago? Turns out I had a bag of Maharaja Chai Oolong in the back of tea collection. Let’s give it a try, shall we?

It’s…decent. It’s very heavy on the spices — so much so that the oolong is drowned out by the strength of the cinnamon/clove/cardamom/star anise combination. I can see why this would be blended with Samurai Chai Maté, but I’d rather have that than this. Your mileage may vary.

Episode 178: Fennel Spice

My first foray into Numi Organic Tea’s savory tea line was…not so great. Would their Fennel Spice blend be better? Let’s see, shall we?

The fennel and licorice add a nice sweet/savory note that’s further accented by the celery root and dill. Orange and black pepper are in this as well, although they’re not very strong. Even with that, I’m actually kinda liking this blend!

Episode 229: Mengku Najiao Pu’erh

Today, I’m sampling a pretty interesting tea from M&K’s Tea Company — Mengku Naijao Pu’erh. According to them, this tea is a great introduction to pu’erh. Let’s give it a try!

Because this is grown in the same region as Yunnan Gold, it shares some of the same taste characteristics. The difference here is that the peppery taste is more prominent. The tea is a bit bitter even for the short steep time, but not overwhelmingly so. Your mileage may vary.

Episode 231: Green Tea Chai

Heather and the crew at Rishi Tea sent over a boatload of blends for me to try out, and the first one that caught my eye was the green tea chai. (You know I like my chai.)

Green tea (sencha, I think?) is blended with lemongrass, ginger, cardamom, peppermint, licorice and black pepper to produce a spicy, yet mild cup of tea. The green tea gives a good sweet base, and the other inclusions provide just the right amount of kick. Not too bad!
