Episode 006: Hula Maté

Tazo’s Hula Maté is…eh, it’s okay. Not spectacular, but not totally bad either. Similar to Samurai Chai Maté, this is a maté blend with a lot going on. However, the flavors really don’t play well together.

I’d highly recommend having this iced instead of hot. (But even iced, it’s not that spectacular.) Might taste good with a splash of alcohol though.

This tea has been discontinued by Tazo, but you may be able to find a similar blend in Summit Spice & Tea Company’s Maté Calypso.

Episode 008: Aveda Comforting Tea

Aveda’s Comforting Tea blend (well, it’s a tisane if we’re being super technical) is a perfect introductory herbal tea. The lush aromatics of peppermint, basil, and sweet fennel are sweetened to perfection with the addition of licorice root.

This is the same tea Aveda serves in their spas worldwide! If you’re having a rough day, brew up a cup of this and lose yourself in the taste and aroma. You’re feeling better already!

Episode 009: Bodhi Brew

Bodhi Brew is Handmade Tea’s first tea blend. Handmade Tea is a subscription service where you’re sent one tea blend a month, but the tea blend also includes individual tins of the components of the tea blend. Bodhi Brew’s mix of green tea, coconut chips, and black mission figs makes for a nice, smooth cup of green tea worthy for afternoon drinking.

If you’re not a fan of figs, try mixing the green tea and coconut by itself and sweetening with muscovado or turbinado sugar!

Episode 010: Sticky Rice Pu’erh

Pu’erh (sometimes written as pu-erh) can be intimidating at first. I mean, there’s tea bags and loose leaf tea, but pu’erh is often sold in bricks, cakes, or in bird’s nest style tuocha like what you see here. Check out this video for a demonstration on how to brew pu’erh like this.

I’m not sure where I got this from — Golden Moon, maybe? — but it smells and tastes like aromatic sticky rice with a nice, starchy mouth feel. It’s a smooth taste that’s great hot or iced. Whether you’re new to pu’erh or not, give this one a try!
