Episode 231: Green Tea Chai

Heather and the crew at Rishi Tea sent over a boatload of blends for me to try out, and the first one that caught my eye was the green tea chai. (You know I like my chai.)

Green tea (sencha, I think?) is blended with lemongrass, ginger, cardamom, peppermint, licorice and black pepper to produce a spicy, yet mild cup of tea. The green tea gives a good sweet base, and the other inclusions provide just the right amount of kick. Not too bad!

Episode 256: Fire Ginseng

If you want a spicy, peppery cup of tea, then look no further than Rishi Tea’s Fire Ginseng. This is a lively blend of Korean red ginseng, cinnamon, ginger, licorice, pepper, and star anise. Add some orange peel and orange oil to this mix and this is practically potpourri!

Taste-wise, this is VERY strong with all these flavors, so if you’re not a fan of strong blends, you might want to pass this one up. But if you’re up to the challenge, this is a tea that’s packing some serious punch!

Episode 269: Valerian Dream

Rishi Tea mentions that their Valerian Dream blend is “intriguing”…which is pretty much spot on. This is an varied blend of ingredients — cardamom, fennel, licorice, strawberries, spearmint, rose petals, orange, and valerian root.

This tea…I’m trying to pinpoint the flavor. You’ve got a lot of strong flavors here, and the licorice gives a natural sweetness. It reminds me a lot of ESP Emporium’s Fasting Tea, but not as savory.

I will say this — it did help me relax.

Episode 291: West Cape Chai

Rishi Tea’s West Cape Chai is inspired by the West Cape province of South Africa. This lively blend is a rooibos chai with cinnamon, cardamom, star anise (look at that pod!), ginger, black pepper, fennel, peppermint, clove, and ramón nut. You don’t see that every day!

Even with this great mix of herbs and spices, the tea is just kinda middle-of-the-road for me. The peppermint and ramón nut add nice sweet and nutty components to the blend, but not so much that they really change the overall flavor. Your mileage may vary.
