fennel – The Year of Tea

Episode 042: Men’s Activity Tea

ESP Emporium’s Men’s Activity Tea is a familiar blend. It reminds me a lot of Aveda’s Comforting Tea I reviewed last month; super aromatic, sweet, and slightly spicy.

There’s a ton of ingredients in here, and the mix of flavors produces a tangy yet satisfying cup of tea. I’m not sure what makes this a “men’s” tea specifically, but it did give me some get-up-and-go after lunch. Your mileage may vary.

Episode 057: Climber’s High

Surprise — another maté blend! As a non-coffee drinker, maté and black tea are my go-to beverages when I need a buzz. The Tea Spot’s Climber’s High is a great, well-rounded cup of tea that’s great when you need a jolt in the morning or a pick-me-up after lunch.

It’s a yerba maté blend with chai spices, so it’s a light in body but heavy on flavor. There’s also tulsi rama, green tea, white tea, and pu’erh in this blend. It’s kind of a Whitman’s Sampler of tea in one cup!

Episode 174: Kenyan Chai

I’ve gotta say…I’m really a fan of this Kenyan Chai from Zoomdweebie’s. This blend includes black tea from Kenya and it’s mixed with ras el hanout, a savory, pungent spice blend used in North African cuisine.

Ras el hanout is filled with great aromatics (cumin, ginger, cinnamon, etc.), and the unique mix of spices gives a really complex taste to this blend. It’s great hot and fantastic as an iced tea. I love how tea can take you around the world from just a single cup! I just wish I could buy more of this particular blend.

Episode 178: Fennel Spice

My first foray into Numi Organic Tea’s savory tea line was…not so great. Would their Fennel Spice blend be better? Let’s see, shall we?

The fennel and licorice add a nice sweet/savory note that’s further accented by the celery root and dill. Orange and black pepper are in this as well, although they’re not very strong. Even with that, I’m actually kinda liking this blend!

Episode 269: Valerian Dream

Rishi Tea mentions that their Valerian Dream blend is “intriguing”…which is pretty much spot on. This is an varied blend of ingredients — cardamom, fennel, licorice, strawberries, spearmint, rose petals, orange, and valerian root.

This tea…I’m trying to pinpoint the flavor. You’ve got a lot of strong flavors here, and the licorice gives a natural sweetness. It reminds me a lot of ESP Emporium’s Fasting Tea, but not as savory.

I will say this — it did help me relax.
